An Ames letting guide is this really sweet $3 US bit of plastic. It allows you to very rapidly lay down evenly spaced parallel lines --- with spacing ranging from 1/32" to 2" (also does metric measures).

Google it. It's a really cool gadget.

My Ames lettering guide is sitting right next to me. I've never really used it, though. (Probably because I don't own a T-square or a writing desk.)
